ABC’s of Kolrosing
Tuesdays, November 10, 17, and 24, 6:30-9PM
First you hold the knife. You cut incisions into wood, rub in cinnamon and oil, smooth the cuts over with antler or stone. Ta-da! You’re kolrosing, an ancient Scandinavian folk art of “tattooing wood”.
I’ll teach you the basics of kolrosing, then we’ll build on those skills by kolrosing the alphabet. Letters are a great way to study those components that comprise the foundation for writing, drawing, and kolrosing: mark making.
Tuition: $168 per participant
Materials Fee: $50 to be paid to instructor
Age / Ability Level: 13+, Beginner

Combining straight lines, angles, and curves to form letters will hone our technique, while checking if our letters are recognizable and pleasing will help us self-assess and adjust our kolrosing. These fundamentals easily translate into building fun, simple patterns that even nervous drawers can decorate their work with.
Finally, we’ll explore basic aspects of hand lettering, fonts, and layout together to design and kolrose our own unique wooden nametags or small signs that you can proudly wear or display!
All kolrosing supplies will be provided by the instructor during class. Feel free to bring a notebook and pen or pencil if you wish to take notes. If you have glasses or a magnifying visor you use for reading and seeing small details, please bring those.

CENTER FOR PEOPLE AND CRAFT is committed to building a diverse, inclusive learning community where people of all backgrounds feel welcome and able to participate. As we launch our first workshop series, we are dedicating space in each class for reduced-tuition scholarships to support anyone facing financial barriers. As we build a more robust scholarship program, we hope this initial launch will remove barriers and expand access to hands-on learning for all.
Anyone with financial need is encouraged to apply for a half-tuition scholarship. To be considered, please submit a brief online application. Please note that CENTER FOR PEOPLE AND CRAFT is operating with limited financial resources and an entirely volunteer staff. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a spot for every applicant. Each class has one scholarship slot available. Applicants who are not selected in this current round are welcome to reapply. Apply here

Jules Dungca fell headfirst into the world of folk art through a one day beginner greenwood spoon carving class and has since then been branching out to as many crafts and related skills as he can get his hands on—broommaking, tool restoration, leatherworking, kolrosing! He’s in danger of getting sucked down the rabbit hole of textile and fiber arts next. His favorite thing about hand crafts is how they ground you in the present, in tactility, and in community with others.
