Traditional Appalachian Clogging - Intro
Mondays, 5/4 - 6/8: 6:30 - 7:30 PM

This class will provide an introduction to traditional Appalachian clogging where students will learn the “foundational steps” of clogging. The class will learn different ways to combine the foundational steps and eventually create their own patterns to begin experimenting with “freestyling”.

Intermediate Traditional Appalachian Clogging
Mondays, 5/4 - 6/8: 8 - 9 PM

This intermediate class builds upon skills learned in Intro to Traditional Appalachian Clogging. At the end of this class students will have the opportunity to perform in a ‘hoedown’ for invited family and friends.

Intro to Green Wood Carving
Tuesdays, May 5 & 12 6-9pm
$130 (plus $10 materials)
Come learn the basics of green wood carving in a cozy atmosphere. You'll learn about carving knives and grips, wood grain and carving safety. We’ll start with fresh, green birch logs and learn to split the wood, design a simple project, then use carving axes, pull saws, and carving knives to create a finished product such as a butter spreader or spatula.

Sailor's Ditty Bag
Thursdays 5/7, 5/14, 5/21, 5/28 7 - 9pm

In this class, students build a sailor's ditty bag, a traditional sampler that works through every foundational technique in sailmaking and marlinspike seamanship: seams, reinforcements, shaping, cringles, splicing, knots, and more.

Our Rivers and Willows 1: Tending to Willows for Weaving
May 8 10am - 1pm
Tiered pricing $15 / $33 / $63
Learn about tending basketry willows from a local farmer and basketweaver, and see what it takes to get willows growing. This session will take place at Urban Roots, where we’ll visit a basketry willow plot, practice stripping willows, talk about tending wild willows and learn simple weaving techniques.

Mazinigwaadan—Bead it!
May 10 & 16, 9AM - 2PM

In this beginner-friendly class led by Mary LeGarde, participants will design and create a beaded pendant that will be made into a bolo tie. Carve out some time out of your busy schedule to work with your hands, to learn a new skill, and to connect with your community.

Intro to Kolrosing

Kolrosing is a craft of the people. The materials and the basics are simple once you get the hang of them, but you can take the craft wherever you want, from simple symbols and letters to stunning patterns and illustrations.

Our Rivers and Willows 2: Planting, Tending & Stripping Willows
Friday, May 15 10am - 1pm
Tiered pricing $15 / $33 / $63
Visit a willow plot at the Good Acre in its second year of growth. We will have garden beds prepared, and everyone will have a chance to put willow sticks in the ground. We’ll discuss methods for successful growing, weed management, plant longevity, and more. We will also experiment with stripping bark and learn simple weaving techniques.

Service Learning Chopping Blocks
May 22: 9 AM - 5 PM
By Donation (valued at $150)
In this 1-day class, students create modular chopping blocks, a foundational tool for traditional woodcraft, and will be used at CPC for years to come.

Illuminating invasion: Buckthorn Wands & Casting Beeswax
Sat, May 23 & Sun, May 24: Noon - 3 PM
$120 (plus $40 materials)
In this 2-day candle making workshop, students will carve buckthorn saved from burn piles and create molds that will be used to cast beeswax taper candles.

Mandala Dotting
May 27: 5 - 9 PM
$85 (plus $20 materials)
Explore circular design as both an art and meditation – using paint and application tools – watch as your mandalas emerge from the background one dot at a time. The word mandala comes from Sanskrit and means “circle.”

Straw Craft foundations

This class will cover foundational skills used to weave many traditional straw patterns so that participants will walk away with the ability to make multiple different projects.

Multicolor Turkey Wing Hand Broom
June 23: 6 - 9 PM
$70 (plus $20 materials)
Celebrate everything June has to offer by making a multicolored turkey wing hand broom. Turkey wing hand brooms are probably the most iconic handmade broom style, and this class takes them up a notch by incorporating more color to the design. Beginners and experienced broom makers are welcome to join.

Green Wood Carving: End Grain Cups
June 27: 9 AM - 4:30 PM
$175 (+$15 materials)
End-grain cups are a fun green wood carving prokect and a type of vessel that borrow form and techniques from a combination of Swedish and Japanese carving and turning styles. The finished product is a functional piece of wooden ware for everyday use.
