service learning: staked stools

Saturday, 4/4 - Monday, 4/6: 9 AM - 4 PM (includes 1 hour for lunch)

Join artisan Gabe Strand in building wooden shop stools, an essential workshop element that will help outfit the CPC workshop. We will work collectively to build stools, and in the process learn foundational hand tool skills with broad application in woodworking. As we make the stools that will literally support CPC students for years to come, we’ll exercise creativity, craftsmanship, and community. If you’re curious about traditional staked joinery, or just want the experience of woodworking in community, join us!

This and other Service Learning Projects guide community members in building essential workshop elements that will support future classes for years to come. This project is made possible with the generous support of American Scandinavian Foundation.

  • Tuition: By Donation, this workshop is valued at $400 per participant

  • Materials Fee: None All materials provided

  • Optional Tools to Bring: Instructor will provide all tools

  • Age / Ability Level: This class is open to all levels of woodworking experience. Minimum age 16; 12 with an adult.

  • In a 3-day class, students will construct three-legged staked stools for classroom use while learning joinery and woodworking skills: shaping leg profiles with handplanes; drilling angled holes with bit and brace; chair/stool geometry; using wooden wedges for staked joinery; sequencing and glue-up techniques; surface prep, painting with milk paint, and decorative carving.

  • Since this class will build collectively and cooperatively, students may participate to their level of comfort and ability. Some periods of physical exertion can be expected while using hand tools.

CENTER FOR PEOPLE AND CRAFT is committed to building a diverse, inclusive learning community where people of all backgrounds feel welcome and able to participate. As we launch our first workshop series, we are dedicating space in each class for reduced-tuition scholarships to support anyone facing financial barriers. As we build a more robust scholarship program, we hope this initial launch will remove barriers and expand access to hands-on learning for all.

Anyone with financial need is encouraged to apply for a half-tuition scholarship. To be considered, please submit a brief online application. Please note that CENTER FOR PEOPLE AND CRAFT is operating with limited financial resources and an entirely volunteer staff. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a spot for every applicant. Each class has one scholarship slot available. Applicants who are not selected in this current round are welcome to reapply.  Apply here
