Hex Weave Basket with Black Ash

August 22, 9am - 5pm with 1 hour lunch

Hex weave is an open weave which forms six pointed and five pointed stars. Working with prepared black ash material, we will start by weaving our base, then turn our corners by adding five pointed stars. Then we’ll continue weaving up the walls with 6 pointed stars. This whole basket is an “under one, over one” weave, except the lashes rim, which we will do last. This particular basket is called the shaker cheese basket.

  • Tuition: $160 per participant

  • Apply for a Community Access seat 

  • Materials Fee: $30 to be paid to instructor, includes branches and logs for practice and two spoon blanks

  • Age / Ability Level: Beginner friendly. 15+, or 12+ with a registered adult.

  • This is a hands-on class in which you’ll learn the basics of weaving with black ash.

  • We will be talking about how to use gravity and lighten grip for longer endurance. Grip strength is not a requirement, but something to consider since we will be using grip all day. Axing is not recommended if you have a shoulder or elbow injury.

As we launch our first workshop series, we are dedicating space in each class for reduced-tuition scholarships to support anyone facing financial barriers. As we build a more robust scholarship program, we hope this initial launch will remove barriers and expand access to hands-on learning for all.

    Anyone with financial need is encouraged to apply for a half-tuition scholarship. To be considered, please submit a brief online application. Please note that CENTER FOR PEOPLE AND CRAFT is operating with limited financial resources and an entirely volunteer staff. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a spot for every applicant.   • CPC is able to provide refunds up to two weeks before the start date of the class for which the registration was submitted, though we do retain a $20 fee for return payment processing. If you need to cancel your class within the two week window, a refund is not guaranteed, but will be considered based on several factors.

    If CPC needs to cancel a class due to low enrollment, teacher illness, or other factors, you will receive a full refund. Read our full set of policies.

meet your instructor

Zac Fittipaldi has been making baskets for about twenty years, with an emphasis on Black Ash, Willow, and Basswood. He grows basketry and ornamental willow. All the black ash is harvested from local wild trees, and hand pounded. Living a subsistence lifestyle as much as possible, we also process wild rice.
