Intro to Green Wood Carving

Tuesdays, May 5 & 12 6-9pm:

Come learn the basics of green wood carving in a cozy atmosphere. You'll learn about carving knives and grips, wood grain and carving safety. We’ll start with fresh, green birch logs and learn to split the wood, design a simple project, then use carving axes, pull saws, and carving knives to create a finished product such as a butter spreader or spatula. Tool choice and sharpening will be addressed briefly.

Above all, we'll have fun together and go home with the confidence to keep carving. This class emphasizes patience, self expression and curiosity more than perfection—ideal for anyone ready to slow down, learn through doing, and make something with their hands. This three-session series is designed for beginners.

  • Tuition: $130 per participant

  • Apply for a scholarship

  • Materials Fee: $10 to be paid to instructor

  • Age / Ability Level: Beginner

  • In this two-session series, we will explore the simple joy of shaping fresh wood into useful and beautiful objects. We will practice safe knife handling, discover how to read the grain, and experience the calming rhythm of handwork. Together we’ll make small projects—like butter spreaders, chopsticks, hair sticks, or spatulas—that build skills step by step. Along the way, you’ll learn how to create a carving space at home, care for your tools, and approach green wood carving as a creative practice.

  • CENTER FOR PEOPLE AND CRAFT is committed to building a diverse, inclusive learning community where people of all backgrounds feel welcome and able to participate. As we launch our first workshop series, we are dedicating space in each class for reduced-tuition scholarships to support anyone facing financial barriers. As we build a more robust scholarship program, we hope this initial launch will remove barriers and expand access to hands-on learning for all.

Anyone with financial need is encouraged to apply for a half-tuition scholarship. To be considered, please submit a brief online application. Please note that CENTER FOR PEOPLE AND CRAFT is operating with limited financial resources and an entirely volunteer staff. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a spot for every applicant. Each class has one scholarship slot available. Applicants who are not selected in this current round are welcome to reapply.  Apply here
