Kulning: Scandinavian Herd Calling

Calling in the body, breath and power
In this four-session workshop (1.5 hours each), participants will explore and practice kulning, the ancient Scandinavian herding call once used by women to summon livestock across long distances. The class introduces the tradition’s history and cultural context while teaching vocal techniques for breath, projection, and tone. Focus on mindfulness to support the body and protect the voice as well as recontextualizing kulning for present day use will also be explored. Participants will practice together, bringing this powerful tradition into a new urban setting. Open to all voices—no prior singing experience required.

What to bring: comfortable clothing, hydrating beverage. Note taking supplies are optional.
Age / Ability Level: 16+, beginner friendly.

The project consists of mostly hand-sewing, so hand-eye coordination, small movements, etc. Mostly sitting.

Please note that CENTER FOR PEOPLE AND CRAFT is operating with limited financial resources and an entirely volunteer staff. Therefore, we cannot guarantee a spot for every applicant. CPC is able to provide refunds up to two weeks before the start date of the class for which the registration was submitted, though we do retain a $20 fee for return payment processing. If you need to cancel your class within the two week window, a refund is not guaranteed, but will be considered based on several factors.

Ellen Skoro is an artist and mental health care worker who fell in love with kulning a decade ago. She enjoys a wide spectrum of cultural practices, particularly Nordic and Celtic, as well as mythology, music and storytelling. She is excited to share kulning as a tool for cultural connection, body awareness and a source of personal power.
