Kulning: Scandinavian Herd Calling

Calling in the body, breath and power

In this four-session workshop (1.5 hours each), participants will explore and practice kulning, the ancient Scandinavian herding call once used by women to summon livestock across long distances. The class introduces the tradition’s history and cultural context while teaching vocal techniques for breath, projection, and tone. Focus on mindfulness to support the body and protect the voice as well as recontextualizing kulning for present day use will also be explored. Participants will practice together, bringing this powerful tradition into a new urban setting. Open to all voices—no prior singing experience required.

Ellen Skoro is an artist and mental health care worker who fell in love with kulning a decade ago. She enjoys a wide spectrum of cultural practices, particularly Nordic and Celtic, as well as mythology, music and storytelling. She is excited to share kulning as a tool for cultural connection, body awareness and a source of personal power.
